Increased stomach acid in people with GERD is caused by a weakening of the valve located at the bottom of the esophagus. Under normal conditions, this valve opens when food and drink enter the stomach to be digested. After food or drink enters the stomach, the valve will close tightly again so that stomach contents do not come back up into the esophagus. 

  In people with GERD, this process does not occur perfectly. Weakened valves don't close properly. This eventually causes stomach contents, including food and stomach acid, to rise into the esophagus. Over time, the lining of the esophagus will become irritated and lead to inflamation.

  This condition is often mistaken for and equated with dyspepsia. Though these are two different conditions.
Therefore, it is important to know how to prevent this disease from recurring, one of which is by adopting a healthy diet. How to? 

1. Avoid foods that can trigger stomach acid to rise, such as spicy, fatty foods, sour foods, carbonated drinks and contain alcohol. 
2. Eat small portions, but often. 
People with GERD can try to adopt a diet five times a day with smaller portions than normal portions. 
3. Chew food slowly
This can help the digestive process and lighten the work of the stomach. 
4. Pay attention to posture when eating and after eating
Make it a habit to sit in a good position after eating and avoid lying down immediately. 
5. Do not eat before going to bed, or close to bedtime at night
The organs of the body need time to digest food. Make it a habit to eat dinner at least three to four hours before going to bed. 
 Besides being good for digestion, this type of food can also help maintain overall body health. 

  Apart from adopting a healthy diet for people with GERD, lifestyle changes also need to be made. When suffering from this disease, there are several things that must be applied, including:

1. Avoid obesity alias overweight. If you are overweight, try to lose weight. 
2. Quit smoking. 
3. Don't lie down after eating, give a break of at least 2 to 3 hours. 
4. Try to choose a comfortable sleeping position, one of which is by tilting your head. 
5. Do not wear clothes that are too tight, especially in the stomach and chest area. Because this can trigger a feeling of discomfort and tightness. 
Unfortunately, many people with GERD often underestimate this condition. In fact, this condition can cause complications if left untreated. 


Diet Sehat untuk Penderita GERD

Jika sudah demikian, rasa tidak nyaman bisa muncul dan mengganggu aktivitas sehari-hari. Lantas, bagaimana pola makan sehat bagi penderita GERD? 

  Sebelumnya, perlu Anda ketahui, GERD alias gastroesophageal reflux disease merupakan kondisi yang terjadi akibat peningkatan kadar asam lambung. Penyakit ini bisa terjadi akibat melemahnya katup (sfingter) yang ada di esofagus bagian bawah. Gejala khas GERD adalah sensasi atau rasa asam di mulut disertai nyeri di dada hingga tenggorokan. 

  Menerapkan Diet Sehat meningkatan asam lambung pada penderita GERD disebabkan oleh melemahnya katup yang terletak di bagian bawah kerongkongan. Dalam kondisi normal, katup ini terbuka saat makanan dan minuman masuk ke dalam perut untuk dicerna. Setelah makanan atau minuman masuk ke dalam lambung, katup akan menutup kembali dengan rapat agar isi lambung tidak naik kembali ke kerongkongan. 

  Pada penderita GERD, proses ini tidak terjadi secara sempurna. Katup yang melemah tidak menutup dengan benar. Ini akhirnya menyebabkan isi lambung, termasuk makanan dan asam lambung, naik ke kerongkongan. Seiring waktu, lapisan kerongkongan akan teriritasi dan menyebabkan peradangan. 

  Kondisi ini sering dikira dan disamakan dengan dispepsia. Padahal ini adalah dua kondisi yang berbeda. 
Oleh karena itu, penting untuk mengetahui cara mencegah penyakit ini kambuh, salah satunya dengan menerapkan pola makan yang sehat. Bagaimana caranya? 

1. Hindari makanan yang dapat memicu asam lambung naik 
seperti makanan pedas, berlemak, makanan asam, minuman bersoda dan mengandung alkohol. 
2. Makan dengan porsi kecil, tapi sering
Penderita GERD dapat mencoba menerapkan pola makan lima kali sehari dengan porsi lebih kecil dari porsi normal. 
3. Kunyah makanan secara perlahan
Hal ini dapat membantu proses pencernaan dan meringankan kerja lambung. 
4. Perhatikan postur tubuh saat makan dan setelah makan
Biasakan duduk dengan posisi yang baik setelah makan dan hindari langsung berbaring. 
5. Jangan makan sebelum tidur, atau menjelang waktu tidur malam
Organ tubuh membutuhkan waktu untuk mencerna makanan. Biasakan untuk makan malam setidaknya tiga sampai empat jam sebelum tidur. 
Selain baik untuk pencernaan, makanan jenis ini juga dapat membantu menjaga kesehatan tubuh secara keseluruhan. 

  Selain menerapkan pola makan sehat bagi penderita GERD, perubahan gaya hidup juga perlu dilakukan. Saat menderita penyakit ini, ada beberapa hal yang harus diterapkan, antara lain:

1. Hindari obesitas alias kelebihan berat badan. Jika Anda kelebihan berat badan, cobalah untuk menurunkan berat badan. 
2. Berhenti merokok. 
3. Jangan berbaring setelah makan, beri waktu istirahat minimal 2 sampai 3 jam. 
4. Usahakan memilih posisi tidur yang nyaman, salah satunya dengan memiringkan kepala. 
5. Jangan menggunakan pakaian yang terlalu ketat, terutama di area perut dan dada. Karena hal ini dapat memicu rasa tidak nyaman dan sesak. 
Sayangnya, banyak penderita GERD sering menyepelekan kondisi ini. Padahal, kondisi ini bisa menimbulkan komplikasi jika tidak ditangani.
